Who is suitable for rhinoplasty?

A cosmetic rhinoplasty continues to be a very popular treatment across the UK. In 2017, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reported that over two-thousand nose jobs were performed in 2017, with the number of surgeries increasing in both men and women. With its popularity comes responsibility, however, as cosmetic surgeons should be advising on suitability for all of their patients. Who is suitable for a rhinoplasty and, more importantly, who is not?

Rhinoplasty suitability

The patients that are typically suitable for a rhinoplasty are those that understand the procedure they are proposing to undertake and are the right age. The surgery and recovery process can take some patience as your nose heals, so it’s important you are aware that will be some swelling, pain, and redness. We would always advise that you don’t undergo a nose job at an early age and wait until it has reached its adult size. When it has stopped growing, then it may be suitable to consider cosmetic surgery because your nose will not be undergoing any more natural changes. For girls, this happens around the age of 16, and for men it is typically around 17 – 18.

Expectations and preparation

A suitable candidate for rhinoplasty is that they are well-adjusted and have reasonable expectations of their surgery. The ideal candidate understands that they are improving a facial feature and not in the pursuit of perfection, because this may be an unhealthy mindset and will therefore lead to dissatisfaction when the surgery is healed. It’s also very important that the patient takes the suitable amount of time off work and understands the aftercare set out for them, as if these are not heeded then you may risk your safety, results, and chances of infection.

Reasons we would advise against rhinoplasty

As a reputable rhinoplasty surgeon in Guildford and Harley Street, Mr Rowe-Jones wishes to increase each patient’s confidence and self-image with their nose job. Therefore, we do specify some reasons where cosmetic surgery would not be in the patient’s best interest.

  • Psychological conditions: Some personality disorders such as body dysmorphia and very low self-image can lead to very high expectations of surgery. These kinds of procedures can actually worsen these psychological concerns as they may not deliver the idealised results that the patient’s irregularly high standards uphold.
  • Neglecting risks: We would advise against surgery if a surgery candidate does not appreciate or understand the risks and unpredictability associated with their rhinoplasty. We cannot guarantee exact results and there are risks associated with the surgery and healing process that must be accepted before undertaking the procedure.
  • Influence: We would also advise against rhinoplasty if the patient appeared to be under the influence or persuasion of a significant other or person close to them. It is important that the decision is entirely your own and you are not altering your appearance under the instruction or influence of someone else.
