Taping in rhinoplasty
Following your nose surgery, you will need to to wear a dressing on your nose. Nasal taping and an overlying splint will be an essential contribution to healing and aftercare for protection and support. This dressing stays in place for about one week. We will remove this for you at your first visit after surgery.
Why tape and dress a nose?
There are many reasons why surgeons use nasal dressings after a rhinoplasty. Positive benefits include:
– to help control oedema (swelling), as taping creates pressure over the soft tissues
– to help support your nose in its new shape
– to protect the nose
– to keep the bones in position if they have been broken and moved
Longer term taping
I rarely recommend longer-term taping as there is no absolute, clear-cut evidence that this helps. However, there may be some benefits for patients with thick skin, especially if they are having secondary surgery. If advised to tape, this is usually for between 1-3 months following your nose surgery, though it does depend on the rhinoplasty carried out and the healing response in the individual. Factors such as age and skin type are all taken into account. I usually recommended that your nose is taped during the night while you sleep, as most swelling occurs during this time. In the daytime, you can mostly let the skin ‘breathe’.
Taping itself is relatively straight forward. We will show you how to cut pieces of tape to the right length and how to apply them over the bridge so that they overlap each other. Occasionally another strip may be placed around the tip of the nose for support. Your surgeon will be able to give you specific instructions as to how to tape and how often, and should demonstrate the technique.
Problems with taping
The practice of taping can sometimes irritate the skin or nose, and it can be difficult to clean and soothe the skin and remove the adhesive when you change or remove tape. In these circumstances, a mild astringent, for example witch hazel, can help. Your surgeon will be able to advise you on this.
