septoplasty

what is a septoplasty?

Septoplasty is an operation to correct displacements, bends or twists in the nasal septum that are causing blockage.

Septoplasty can be performed to allow more room in the nose for other operations such as sinus surgery.

Some noses may look deviated on the outside because the septum is twisted. There may be a dip on the outside of the nose with nasal blockage, known as a 'boxer's nose' or a "saddle nose", where the septum has collapsed and buckled.

Septoplasty may be part of a cosmetic operation to straighten a bent nose or rebuild a collapsed nose.

you and your operation

The operation is usually carried out with the patient asleep and takes about forty-five minutes. From inside the nose the cartilage and bone of the septum can be repositioned and straightened. It is then held in place with stitches. At The Nose Clinic we make every effort to minimize bleeding during surgery and we use techniques that enable us to avoid routinely putting packing into the nose at the end of the operation.

This makes your recovery more comfortable and means there is no painful traditional pack removal necessary.

After the operation it is possible to go home on the same day or the next morning. Surgery is rarely painful and is not associated with bruising. We
usually advise staying off work for 2 weeks.
